I don't think Putin would go farther than Crimea and try to get the whole Ukraine back - it would be the real blood-shed then in the areas where most of the people are Ukrainians who don't want to be assimilated, and he doesn't want another Afghanistan. Crimea was a safe bet for him because of mostly Russian population.
